Why is it called a law firm?

Legitimate law firm is a commercial organization that functions by providing legal services to clients. However, what do the terms "law firms" literally mean? Are these terms merely "law companies" or, perhaps, something else? There are a few key reasons behind this terminology:

1. History and Tradition

The noun "law firm" is a late 1800s neologism reflecting the transition from sole practitioners to multi-lawyer partnerships in the legal practice. The label accentuating the specificity of the new multi-lawyer companies was different from the former one-man shops. The "firm" word stood for a reliable bond, being together in the long run, and durability.

2. Conveys Professional Service

A firm means the unity of professionals to provide services, generally it is not known as the production (sales, manufacturing, etc.) oriented business. Professionalism service firms, such as law firms, accounting firms, architecture firms, etc., require higher level of expertise, ethics and education than usual. "Firm" – here it is generalized and collective experience and competence is meant.

3. Suggests Formal Organization

Naming it a "firm" is equivalent to declaring its formal business structure, which is a result of a long-term leadership, a set of mechanisms, professionals and other components that provide the business with efficiency and order. The ingenuity and capacity of support internal team help the organization for effective delivery of advice and assurance. "Only" refereeing to the lawyers on their own without capturing some sense of governance and order of operations is likewise incomplete.

Consequently, "law firm" triumphs (as it aptly exudes that clients are indeed working with highly competent, very much composed professionals who have chosen to establish a structured joint venture with the specific purpose of expertly discharging a variety of legal services). That tag line, in contrast to the other possibilities such as a law office or a law practice is a creative means of getting the same idea across in a more concise manner. The title still survives because it continues to be the most suitable choice, as it concisely conveys the true nature of that type of entity in its name.
